Doug Schuler

Doug Schuler has been working at the intersection of technology and society for 20 years. Doug believes that positive social change is possible and that technology could play a role in promoting it. To that end he has given presentations on that theme in Asia, Africa, Europe, and North and South America. He has written and edited a number of books (including "New Community Networks: Wired for Change") and articles on these themes and is a co-founder of the Seattle Community Network, free, public access computer network that supports community and civic engagement. Doug is currently a member of the Faculty (evening and weekend studies) at The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington where he teaches programs that integrate computing with the public good. Doug is a former chair of Computer Professionals for Social Responsibility and organizer of the "Directions and Implications of Advanced Computing" symposia series which has been convened every other year since 1987. He is the program director for the Public Sphere Project (www.scn.org/sphere) for Computer Professionals for Social Responsibility (CPSR) which is focusing on the idea of "civic intelligence" in which citizens can become more competent to address the important issues of our day. The Public Sphere "pattern language project" is a global, participatory project designed to elicit, represent, and understand these ideas in a coherent and compelling manner.
