Recount opportunity in New Mexico -- Kim Cranston 12-15-04

Note about this page: There is a range of material here representing a small sample of the email I receive on the topic, some of which I might have forwarded, and some of which I might in retrospect have regretted forwarding. Instead, I have chosen to spare my list and post it here.

Perhaps the most interesting outcome of this is that it makes it easy to track the genesis of an urban legend of sorts, a widely circulated message, which I received on Nov 12 (reproduced here with the name of a person I don't know, and who I presume was not the author, but who had mailed it to the person who forwarded it to me). That compilation included a piece that had been referenced in an article on Truthout.org on Nov 8 as being attributed to a posting by TruthAll on the Democratic Underground discussion forum and which I had reposted as such here on Nov 8. The same Nov 12 compilation message, but now containing only the TruthAll segment and the now infamous media "lock-down" segment, but with a new opening about a common bumper sticker, then resurfaced in a reformatted form erroneously attributed to Peter Coyote on Nov 13. On Nov 14 this message was referenced by the MSN correspondent Keith Olbermann himself—with shades of the Monte Python skit, "I'm not dead!"

I swear: I'm on vacation (Keith Olbermann)
SECURE UNDISCLOSED LOCATION—Golly, I’ve never been the subject of a conspiracy theory before. Yet, there it is, flying around the Internet under the byline of a Peter Coyote: that when I attempted to break the “lock-down” of coverage of the voting irregularities story in the media during Friday night’s edition of Countdown, I was fired, and left the studio in the middle of the program. Um, no, actually. I’m on vacation— it’s been scheduled since August; I’ll be blogging in the interim; Countdown will continue to cover the story in my absence; I not only wasn’t fired for ‘mentioning’ the story - but we covered it five nights in a row; and, I’ll be back on television on the 22nd (earlier, if developments warrant).
