Wixárika

This fundraiser benefits the health of our planet. The Wixárika (Huichol) people are one of the last remaining Indigenous communities in Mexico who have maintained an unbroken spiritual lineage. Each year, under the guidance of their spiritual leaders, Marakames, they make annual ceremonial pilgrimages to Wirikuta — the desert where their sacred medicine originates. However, in recent decades, the costs of modernity as well as land privatization has affected their entire culture and made these sacred journeys unfeasible for most of them. To make things worse, their young kids are lured by moving to the big cities and losing more of their connection to this pilgrimage, thus quickly losing their culture. These journeys not only renew their spiritual commitments but also serve as offerings to sustain the balance of the Earth’s ecosystems. They teach us that if they stop making these offerings, the entire Earth will suffer.

For the past 35 years Abuela Teresa Rivas Chicahuaxochilt, a revered Mexica spiritual elder from Guadalajara, has walked alongside Marakame Don Julio, the leader of La Laguna. She's offered unwavering financial and ceremonial support to ensure their annual pilgrimage continues. What began as her personal commitment is now a collective responsibility — and a shared prayer — In this fundraiser, we aim to secure reliable transportation that allows the entire community to travel together with dignity and continuity. We aim to buy a 20-seat 4x4 diesel bus to annually transport families to sacred sites, delivery from the US, and pilgrimage support  for their community.

We invite you to contribute to this work of cultural preservation, intergenerational transmission, and ecological prayer.

If there’s anything the world needs more of right now, it’s people who still remember how to pray for the Earth. Every donation — big or small — nourishes a living tradition that protects the Earth and supports all of us.
