Planetwork is a San Francisco based non-profit network using information technology to address the pressing global issues of our time – climate change, biodiversity, economic justice, and online reality.
Planetwork was founded in 1998 with the recognition that the only phenomenon growing as fast as the global ecological crisis was the global communications system and that only with it, could we address the biggest threats facing humanity and the planet.
Planetwork convened the first international conference on global ecology and information technology in May 2000, beginning a conversation about creating a distributed online social network to empower individuals and civil society, and publishing the ASN Whitepaper
Planetwork has served as the non-profit fiscal sponsor for numerous projects over the past two decades and has been the recipient of several million dollars in grants awarded by major foundations.
Planetwork is currently initiating three projects using JLINC technology: Carbon Path pledge with supply-chain verification, Online Journalism with news provenance, Network Infrastructure for interoperable purposeful groups.
